Two years have passed after the Tsunami and earthquake devastated Aceh Province and Nias island on the northern tip of Sumatra / Indonesia. This report is designed to update all interested parties on the many results Bayer has achieved in supporting the reconstruction of teh destroyed region since then.

The Tsunami disaster on 26 December 2004 was one of the worst natural disasters in the past decades and swept away large parts of the coastal areas of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia as well as several outlying islands.Indonesia was worst hit over 130.000 people killed and more than 40.000 still missing. Of the survivors, thousands were made homeless.

Before the deadly wave struck, Aceh province was host to decades-long civil conflict between the Indonesian central government and the seperatist 'Free Aceh Movement' (GAM), claiming lives on both sides.Along with the relief aid, the 'Helsinski-MOU' was signed in August 2005 as the crucial step for peace and develolment.

The response to teh disaster was unprecedented. With the mission to reach out to the affected people,Bayer pledged EUR 500.000 to the reconstruction of the destroyed region in order to create a better future.

The vision was to direct the donation unbureaucraticly in a transparant and accountable manner to those in need. In cooperation with the project 'INDOGERM-direct' of the Indonesian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK-EKONID Jakarta),Bayer identified the sectors 'Healthcare', 'Childcare' and 'Community Development' as essential for implementing reconstruction projects.

The Indonesian-German Disaster Relief Commitee (INDOGERM-direct) was founded by the German Indonesia Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK-EKONID Jakarta) in January 2005 as a response to the Tsunami. With a donation of EUR 500.000, Bayer is one of INDOGERM's biggest corporate donors.

Through the generous donation of Bayer, it was possible to contribute to the reconstruction of Aceh and to help the Indonesian people by giving them new hope for a beter future. Bayer supported three crucial sectors in various locations in Aceh and reached out to hundreds of Tsunami-affected people. Bayer's projects are set in sustainable frameworks and are firmly integrated into the overall development schemes of the governmental development agencies.

With 8 hospitals and more than 115 health institutions wiped out of damaged, the provison of health services and the upgrading of medical infrastructure is vital to the reconstruction of Aceh.

Hundreds of coastal villages were affetced bt the tsunami, destroying the livelihoods of its many inhabitants. Farmland was washed away, fish ponds and wells flooded bt the salt water and building infrastructur was damaged.

Solar lights and fresh water systems

Rebuilt by the German government, the village Muaratiga (East coast) obtained 45 solar lighting systems financed by Bayer. Since the village is not connected to the national electrivity and power supply system, all 45 houses were equipped with solar panels on the rooftops feeding four lights and a socket for household appliances. The village street received 15 solars streetlight that bright up the place at night.

In Muarabatu (North Aceh) and Lamreh (Aceh Besar),Bayer financed the construction of each one water resevoir (40 cubic meters) with solar pumps and coresponding piping system, thus guaranteeing a stable access to fresh water for over 1.000 families of severals villages.
